The county seat of Rankin County, Mississippi, Brandon was designated one of the “Best Places to Live in America” by CNN Money Magazine in 2011. Reasonable home prices and great schools make Brandon attractive to families, and the city’s close proximity to the City of Jackson draws commuters as well. The city is also a popular tourist destination for those interested in the history of the Civil War. Brandon residents take their traditions seriously while striving to ensure that the future of their city remains bright and promising.

Before European settlers arrived in the early 1800s, the area around present-day Brandon was home to Native Americans. Fertile soil and an abundance of game and fish drew pioneers to the region, and camp sites quickly grew into permanent settlements. Shortly after Rankin County was established in 1828, Brandon was formed and named after the state’s first native-born governor, Gerard Brandon. The city became the county seat the following year.

During the Civil War, Brandon lay in the path of General Sherman’s march to the sea, and most of the city’s structures were burned to the ground or looted. Local tradition has it that the Rankin County Confederate Monument located in the 10-acre Downtown Brandon Historic District marks the spot where Sherman laid siege to the town. Visitors can explore Brandon’s history at the Rankin County Historical Society Museum, which is housed in the city’s first general store.

Covering nearly 26 miles of land, Brandon is located in the center of Rankin County, which is bordered to the west by the Pearl River, Mississippi’s second largest river. The man-made Barnett Reservoir lies just a few miles to the north of the city. The topography around Brandon consists of forests, pastures and rolling hills.
